Determining Shapes of Transparent Objects from Two Polarization Images

چکیده
The correspondence between the degree of polarization and the surface normal is not one to one; thus, to obtain the correct surface normal, we have to solve this ambiguity problem. The proposed method solves the ambiguity by comparing two sets of data, one of which is obtained by observing the object as it is, while the other is obtained by observing the object tilted in a small angle. We indicated the relationship between the geometrical property of the object surface and the degree of polarization, and proposed a method to match two sets of polarization data at identical points on the object surface.

Techniques for modeling an object through observation are very important in object recognition and virtual reality. A wide variety of techniques have been developed for modeling objects with opaque surfaces, whereas less attention has been paid to objects with transparent surfaces. A transparent surface has only surface reflection; it has little body reflection. We present a new method for obta...
متن کاملA Combinatorial Transparent Surface Modeling from Polarization Images
This paper presents a combinatorial (decision tree induction) technique for transparent surface modeling from polarization images. This technique simultaneously uses the object’s symmetry, brewster angle, and degree of polarization to select accurate reference points. The reference points contain information about surface’s normals position and direction at near occluding boundary. We reconstru...
متن کاملKohonen Self Organizing for Automatic Identification of Cartographic Objects
Automatic identification and localization of cartographic objects in aerial and satellite images have gained increasing attention in recent years in digital photogrammetry and remote sensing. Although the automatic extraction of man made objects in essence is still an unresolved issue, the man made objects can be extracted from aerial photos and satellite images. Recently, the high-resolution s...
متن کاملPolarization-based Transparent Surface Modeling from Two Views
In this paper, we propose a novel method to recover the surface shape of transparent objects. The degree of polarization of the light reflected from the object surface depends on the reflection angle which, in turn, depends on the object’s surface normal; thus, by measuring the degree of polarization, we are able to calculate the surface normal of the object. However, degree of polarization and...
